Colleagues and Friends of the SAR,
It is my privilege and honor to serve as the 5th president of our burgeoning society. Formed four years ago from the merger of the Societies of Gastrointestinal and Urologic Radiology, we have doubled in size to over 1000 members and strengthened our annual scientific content with 450 abstracts submitted in 2016. The breadth of educational content continues to expand in these challenging times and our website and social media outreach is robust and evolving. While the expansion is impressive, what is most exciting is the high energy of our newest members who represent the future of our great specialty.
Playing to the strengths of our membership, which contains a large number of department chairs and thought leaders, we have developed a mentoring program and leadership track at our annual meeting. Members in training accepted to present during the Scientific Session can receive travel grants from the newly formed SAR fund. The SAR multidisciplinary Disease-Focused Panels continue to expand and promote best practices for the patients we serve. We continue our relationships with the European and Asian Abdominal Radiology Societies and plan an International Education Conference at the Brazilian Congress of Radiology in October.
I would like to thank all of the dedicated volunteers who tirelessly serve the Society and our Board (Judy Yee, Giles Boland, Bernie King, Jonny Kruskal and Desiree Morgan) for their stewardship. I also recognize our past presidents Stuart Silverman, Alec Megibow, Deb Baumgarten and Judy Yee who have placed the SAR on sound footing.
The SAR has a newly named journal, Abdominal Radiology, to reflect the broad scope of our discipline which includes both imaging and intervention. The journal is moving to monthly publication under the leadership of editor Dan Johnson.
Planning for the 2017 meeting at the Diplomat Resort in Hollywood, Florida (March 26-31) is well underway and, thanks to your efforts, we are assured another dynamic program.
The greatest asset of our society is you, our members, who keep us engaged, relevant and fun. Please email your ideas to me or any board member as we draw our strength from you. I am humbled by the opportunity to serve our society, following in the footsteps of my mentors. In trust and friendship I am
William W. Mayo-Smith, MD, FACR, FSAR
SAR President 2016-2017
