A Message from the SAR President

January 2015

new image
Dear SAR members, colleagues and anyone else who wandered to the site,

It’s been more than a few months since I took office and I have neglected to keep my President’s letter up to date. But please do not fear that it is because I have nothing to report; quite the contrary—the board, committee members and the staff have all been quite busy. Here is just a sampling of what we've been up to since the last Annual Meeting:

  • The SAR visited Veracruz, Mexico for the 2014 International Educational Conference and taught a 3 day course including such topics as pediatric MR protocols, trauma in the adult and child, imaging the thyroid, first trimester obstetrical emergencies, 3D ultrasound, MR and CT Urography, MR of HCC, treatment of contrast reactions, large and small bowel emergencies and adrenal lesions. In total, the group of 6 (me, John Leyendecker, Jane Wang, Cary Siegel, Ulrike Hamper and Sudha Anupindi) gave 30+ lectures but also had time to participate in Mexican Independence day celebrations, tour a few museums and historical sites, and eat a whole lot of terrific authentic Mexican food.
  • John Leyendecker has roamed the earth as our visiting professor and he’s been blogging about it. See http://jrlsarvp.blogspot.com/ for his take on the year—illustrated with stunning (and some mundane) photos.
  • Disease-focused panels are taking off! As you may recall, our first DFP was Crohn’s. The success of this panel led to the creation of the DFP Oversight Committee to standardize the way in which new panels are created. Their first order of business was to develop an application form and review process which was completed shortly after the annual meeting. After a call for applications, 3 DFPs were approved without revision and they are (drumroll please…) Renal Cell Carcinoma, Pancreatic IPMN and Liver Fibrosis.  4 additional applications are pending revisions which are due in January 2015. I thank the committee for all of its hard work.
  • A new membership category has been created: Fellowship Member in Training. What does this mean? Radiologists participating in Body Fellowships (both ACGME and non-ACGME accredited) will be allowed to join the SAR for the duration of their fellowship for free with proof of fellow status. What’s included? Access to member’s areas of the website, an on line subscription to Abdominal Imaging, the official journal of the SAR, reduced fees to attend the Annual meeting and an invitation to join as a full member of the SAR once fellowship has been completed.

Here’s just a bit of what you have to look forward to me reporting in the months’ ahead:

  • Selection of the next visiting professor and next team to travel on behalf of the SAR as part of the International Education Conference (IEC).
  • Announcement of the nomination of the next board member.
  • Start of 2 new groups: the Training Education Committee which will build on the work of the committee tasked to define the Abdominal Radiologist and the Association of Program Directors in Abdominal Radiology which will be a resource and forum for those of us who run or support fellowships. Solicitation of member interest will also follow.
  • Announcement of research awards.

So there you have it—or some of it anyway. Of course, other news is that we are a few short months away from gathering in Coronado, California for our Annual Scientific Meeting and Educational Course March 22-27, 2015. This course provides almost 50 hours of CME including 5 SAMs, 189 workshops, a variety of plenary sessions and separate courses on Prostate MR, Advanced Small Bowel Imaging, Virtual Colonoscopy and Dual Energy CT. In addition, will be the usual opportunity to see old friends, make new friends and network with the top talent in abdominal imaging. I hope to see you there!   I am thrilled to be serving as the SAR President for 2014-2015.

Thanks,   Deb Baumgarten, MD, MPH, FACR, FSAR SAR President, 2014-2015
