A Message from the SAR President

April 2014

Dear SAR members and friends, The unprecedented registration at our recent meeting in Boca Raton attests to the widespread and growing interest in the Society. Several of our guests who are not Society members commented to me that they were tremendously impressed by the quality of the meeting, as well as the vibrancy and vitality clearly evident in all of the presentations, breadth of subject matter covered and all of the interactions occurring at the meeting space and between society members. Further evidence of our growth is the addition of 144 new members to our numbers. Having Abdominal Imaging becoming the Society’s official journal, under the leadership of Dan Johnson, is also a significant step forward.

Our Communications and Publications Committees are in the final testing of our updated website. This will provide enhanced functionality over our current site allowing for a lot more educational material to be posted. Many of you who were at the meeting were able to navigate smoothly using the “SAR app” for laptops and mobile devices. Our March Madness case frenzy drew a lot of attention to our website.

At this point in our growth, the board has chartered 3 strategic areas that will further SAR’s goal to become the single best resource for all aspects of education and practice of abdominal radiology. The first is the creation of Disease Focused Panels. These groups will be able to move us from a “modality” society to a “disease management” society. Aside from providing in depth knowledge about the entities that will be explored, collaboration with key clinicians will facilitate SAR shaping the practice guidelines around which these entities will be best managed in the future. Participation in these panels will provide a means whereby SAR members can present this material at national non-radiology meetings further enhancing our value. The second is to significantly expand our ability to deliver year round CME opportunities to all of our members. As reimbursements are becoming tied to MOC activities, this will be a significant value added to the members. Achieving deemed status from the ABR will go a long way towards realizing this goal. Finally, the board will tackle the concept of defining the abdominal radiologist. An extensive report was prepared; the board will be discussing this over the coming year and hopes to report to the membership at our next annual meeting.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the privilege of serving as SAR President for 2013-4.

Alec, Alec J. Megibow MD, MPH, FACR, FSAR SAR President 2013-2014
