A Message from the SAR President

February 2014

Dear SAR members, colleagues and friends,

As our annual meeting draws closer, I thought I might take this opportunity to share with you the excitement surrounding this year’s event and some of the thoughts on the strategic directions under consideration by the board.

The registration is extremely strong; we should certainly equal our last year’s record attendance. If you haven’t registered at this point, please try to do so as soon as possible. We have oversold the contracted block of hotel rooms, but were successful in obtaining more rooms at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. As you are certainly aware by now, the meeting program is filled with the full spectrum of abdominal radiology educational opportunities from basic lectures to cutting edge research topics. Of course this is supported by a large number of workshops for a more informal interactive experience. We have sold out our Dual Energy CT Hands-on Workshop. Our Prostate MRI Hands-on Workshop is also fully registered.

I urge you to consider the unique Small Bowel Imaging Hands-on Workshop. After completing this workshop, you will really be able to perform and interpret CT and MR enterography in both adults and children as well as learn pediatric bowel ultrasound. Not only will you receive guidance by top experts in this field, but you will have access to a true interactive PACS like experience where you can actually interact with images from near 120 cases that you can go through at your own pace almost anywhere on the meeting site. We have also adopted this format to the case of the day sessions - where you can view the cases on your tablet, phone, laptop etc.

Our ability to provide this type of interactive learning experience is directly linked with our long term strategic vision that will allow our meeting to evolve in ways that leverage available technology and propel our ability to provide a cutting edge educational experience.

Several important developments have occurred that will enhance the value of SAR beyond providing a top ranked annual meeting. First, C. Dan Johnson has assumed editorship of Abdominal Imaging. We are exploring ways that SAR can partner with him to create CME. Second, we have asked JG Fletcher to oversee a formal process that will facilitate the development of Disease-Focused Panels, where experts in imaging will partner with top clinicians to produce high quality educational materials that will allow radiologists to interpret complex cases in a way that brings true value to our clinical referrers. Third, through the work of Drs. Zeman and Angela Levy, we have cemented our relationship with the ACR such that all of the guideline panels are now populated by SAR members. The ACR acknowledges this collaboration. Fourth, we have begun preliminary discussions to explore the possibility of making high quality CME producing SAR material available to members throughout the year, not just at meetings.

The excitement surrounding the Society is palpable. At the time of my last writing we had a membership of 654. Our total membership now stands at 694. Additionally, we have conferred fellowship status on 15 active members.

I look forward to seeing all of you in Boca Raton next month.
