SAR Annual Research Grants

The Society of Abdominal Radiology annually selects recipients
of the following grants and awards:


Wylie J. Dodds Research Award  - $15,000

For projects relevant to  gastrointestinal (GI) radiology

Supported by Bracco Diagnostics, Inc.


Morton A. Bosniak Research Award - $15,000

For projects relevant to genitourinary (GU) radiology

Awarded to proposals that may focus on basic science, clinical radiology, health services research or
contrast material.


Howard S. Stern Research Grant - $15,000

For projects focused in abdominal radiology
Supported by Bracco Diagnostics, Inc.

The Grant is to facilitate visionary research in medical imaging by making funds available for pilot projects on
ideas that are intellectually challenging but not yet well enough developed to be suitable for funding by mainstream granting agencies.

The committee will select the most innovative application for the Stern Research Grant. 



  • At the time of application, at least one author of the team must be a SAR member in-good-standing
  • Applicants can hold any career position (i.e. Medical Student, Resident, Fellow, Faculty, etc.). The impact the grant may have in enhancing the applicants career will be taken into consideration by the committee.
  • At the time of application, researchers must identify one primary area of focus for the project, such as MRI; CT; Ultrasound; PET; Nuclear; X-ray; IT; or Outcomes
       (note:  reviewers will keep in mind that projects may crossover into multiple areas of focus)
  • Each specific research project may only be submitted once
  • Different projects may be submitted from the same author(s) for the same or different areas of focus
  • Each project must have its own complete application as outlined below




The deadline to submit applications was December 18, 2019.

All requested documents must be provided as outlined, by or before the stated deadline. 
No extensions will be afforded.


By applying for this grant, you confirm that you understand that awarded funds will not be released until verification of IRB Approval has been submitted to the SAR Office.


  • Application Form (Face Sheet)
    Form must be completely filled out and the following supporting documents uploaded with that form.
  • Scientific Application/ Proposal (CLICK HERE for the approved SAR application template - required - this will download to your computer as a Microsoft Word document)
    Scientific application limited to 5 pages (.5” margins and minimum 12pt. font) including forms,
    description, figures, and references
  •   Title, list of principal investigator and co-investigators, hypothesis, specific aims, background
     and significance, research design and methods, data, illustration, literature cited
    (please do not exceed 15 references), description of facilities
  • Additional Items (REQUIRED)
    Not included in the 5-page limit
  • Biographical sketch (brief NIH format required) for each member of the study (no CVs)
  • Separate page detailing all sources of current funding
  • Statement of support from the Department Chair
  • Budget (If budget exceeds $15,000, please identify other sources of funding)
  • Award funds are to be applied to direct costs only and may not be applied to institutional overhead or any other indirect costs.
  • Salaries and travel expenses are not eligible for faculty, physician, professional, and other providers of research-specific intellectual content (for example, radiologists, pathologists, and physicist faculty).
  • Salaries for providers of services (for example, statisticians, data entry personnel, and off-hours radiologic technologists) are eligible; alternately these may be structured as purchases of specific services.
  • Direct costs (for example, purchases of animals, preparation of specimens, laboratory tests, and the technical component of radiologic tests) are the primary intention of this support, that is, immediate expenditures designed to directly produce the research data.



  • Recognition and presentation of award and plaque at the Annual SAR Business Meeting
  • Starting date is immediately after presentation of the award (annual business meeting)
  • Project must be completed or near completion within two years of the award
  • At completion (two-years), project should be ready for presentation as a scientific paper at the
    SAR annual meeting
  • The SAR member author must remain in-good-standing through the duration of the funded project
