A Message from the SAR President

Farewell- February 2013

When I submitted my manuscript that announced the merger of the SGR and SUR to RADIOLOGY, Herb Kressel, the Journal’s Editor, appropriately asked me to refocus my comments on the issues and challenges that faced the leaders of the two societies. My submission had indeed included too many ‘Thank Yous’ and sounded too much like an Academy Award acceptance speech in Hollywood. Now is my chance to say ‘thank you’…

I first want to thank the many mentors who have helped shape my career – Joe Ferrucci, Peter Mueller, Steven Seltzer, Doug Adams, Skip vanSonnenberg, Pablo Ros, and Frank Jolesz – to name a few.

Next, I want to acknowledge the founders of the two greatest Societies that were ever created. These ‘giants’ in radiology had the foresight to know the importance of organ system specialization long before it became a reality in Radiology. Also, they understood both the academic and social benefits of bringing together physicians with common interests.

I also want to thank many past presidents who have nurtured me in the Society. In particular, I am so appreciative of the late, great Harry Mellins and Jeffrey Newhouse who both pleaded with me to join the SUR. I eventually joined both the SUR and the SGR because although my primary area of interest was the urinary tract, I wanted to be a GI radiologist also. I am particularly grateful for past presidents John Cronan, Nancy Curry, and Peter Mueller for suggesting that I become a Board member at a time that would result in me being the first SAR President.

I thank the current Board members for their support, Ron Zagoria, Dan Johnson, Bill Mayo-Smith, Judy Yee, Deborah Baumgarten and most of all, Alec Megibow, your new SAR President. Let me be clear. I could not have led the Society in its first year without Alec’s amazing intellect, hard work, and collaborative spirit.

Lastly I want to thank Harvey and Lynne Tiras and particularly, Angela Davis, Jessica Whalen and the entire IMM team. As all past presidents know, Angela and Jessica are two incredibly smart, talented, knowledgeable, and conscientious people without whom the Society would simply not function.

Finally I want to thank my children Alex, Stacy and Mike, and especially my lovely wife Tricia who has accompanied me to every meeting and tolerated her ‘workaholic’ husband who has been spending virtually every weekend on slides, papers, and the Society.

So there – I gave my Academy award speech after all. It indeed has been an honor and a privilege to serve the Society as its first President. I look forward to contributing in other ways for many years to come. Thank you very much.
