A Message from the SAR President

April 2016

new imageTo SAR Members and Friends,

It has been an amazing year filled with accomplishments and new initiatives for the society. The recent SAR meeting was a wonderful success from the high level of science presented to the outstanding plenary sessions, and the largest number of trainees ever attending the annual meeting. The remarkable venue added to the tremendous comradery and ability to network by attendees.

The Mentorship Program kick-off was well-attended and I would like to thank each of the senior society members who came to offer their support and mentoring skills. I recently received this feedback from a SAR mentee: “The timing of it was helpful for me by being early in the week and allowing me the social events later in the week to strengthen and reinforce the relationships I started earlier in the week. I am sure that several of the relationships I started will be fruitful in both mentoring capacity and with peers for possible collaborations. As a beginning junior faculty, this is probably the most valuable experience I have had.” The Leadership Program was also well-received with inspiring workshops and a special evening Leadership Reception which was a wonderful opportunity for additional networking for junior members with many well-known leaders. I would like to give a special thank you to Fred Lee for providing the off-site location for this event. The Membership Hall of Fame displays caught the attention of our attendees and brought well-deserved recognition to some of our most accomplished and long-term SAR members.

In 2015 we saw the largest growth in our society membership ever with 285 new members (including 119 new members in training). This attests both to the vibrancy of the society and the success of the merger. Over the past year we have seen continued success of our Disease-Focused Panels (DFPs). Three new DFPs (Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, and Rectal Cancer) bring the total to eleven. Of note our Prostate Cancer DFP developed a white paper with the American Urologic Association (AUA) consisting of a new consensus statement on prostate MRI following a negative biopsy. I encourage you to peruse the SAR website to learn more about the DFPs and opportunities for your involvement.

It has been an exhilarating year and I look forward to continuing to work with Bill Mayo-Smith (SAR President 2016-2017) and the rest of the Board of Directors (Giles Boland, Jonny Kruskal, Bernie King, and Desiree Morgan). My gratitude goes to the board for all their hard work and support over the past year. Thank you to all the members of SAR committees who provide generous service throughout the year, and to Lynne and Harvey Tiras, Jessica Whalen and Catie Duhon of International Meeting Managers for all their hard work in making the Society and the annual meeting such a success.
