A Message from the SAR President

February 2016

new imageDear SAR Members and Friends,

The buzz is definitely on for the upcoming SAR 2016 Annual Scientific Meeting and Educational Course! We hope to see many of you there as we have increased educational opportunities in response to our membership. Scientific offerings have also been expanded so there will be four sessions with two parallel tracks to showcase an influx of stellar research abstracts.

We continue old favorites with the ever popular Cases for Aces Plenary Session and all 5 of our SA-CME Courses will incorporate the ability for interactivity with Diagnosis Live. A brand new Female Pelvic MRI Workshop will be introduced which is an important addition to our other interactive workshops (CT Colonography, Dual Energy CT, Prostate MRI, and Small Bowel Imaging). I have heard from many attendees that they really appreciate these hands-on workshops, the ability to directly interact with many leaders in the field, the opportunity to ask directed questions in a smaller setting and to learn from top-notch educators.

Featured this year as new SAR initiatives are a Mentoring Program with a kick-off luncheon event to be held on Monday and a Leadership Program consisting of a two part workshop primer to be held Tuesday. An off-site Thursday evening leadership reception will feature Bo Fishback, founder/CEO of Zaarly. The multidisciplinary Disease Focused Panels (DFPs) have been very successful and continue to expand. There are 3 newly approved DFP’s which brings us to a total of 11 panels. Our SAR Prostate Cancer DFP has developed a wonderful white paper “Performance, Interpretation, and Reporting of Prostate MRI following a Negative Biopsy” with our Urology colleagues in the American Urologic Association (AUA). We are in our second year of supporting an important program for Abdominal Radiology Program Directors.

You will also notice at the meeting a focus and recognition of our most senior members (of the previous SGR/SUR). We will congratulate our longest-time members with special displays of their histories and contributions to the field of abdominal radiology. We hope that you will continue to learn from and be inspired by these members of the new SAR Hall of Fame. The plan is to continue this as an annual event at the meeting -one day you too can be inducted!

The meeting continues in its tradition of being family friendly. A special Welcome Reception will occur with entertainment not to be missed against the backdrop of a tropical sunset. You can swim with the dolphins on property and there are boats and a tram to help transport you. The property is large to accommodate the size of our group so do plan on a bit of extra time needed to get to lectures and events. Look for a new and improved meeting app which help guide you during the meeting, and it will also have a membership component called “SAR Member Community” incorporated later for year-round usage!
We recently completed our IEC to Stellenbosch, South Africa which was a very successful collaboration with the Radiological Society of South Africa (RSSA). Mukesh Harasinghani is completing his year as Igor Laufer Visiting Professor and Bill Mayo-Smith will be leading the new IEC team to Curitiba, Brazil in October. For 2016-2017 Julia Fielding has been named the Marshak International Lecturer and Cooky Menias as the new Igor Laufer Visiting Professor. New SAR committee assignments will be posted soon so please visit the SAR website. Also as a reminder we encourage you to support the society by contributing to the SAR Fund and all donors will be recognized at the annual meeting.

Let me end by thanking the SAR Board (Bill, Giles, Bernie, Jonny and Deb), a group of extraordinary individuals I have had the pleasure of working with, the amazing Committee Chairs and Members who support the society with selfless volunteerism, and of course the IMM team who are invaluable in working with all of us and helping us to achieve our goals.
