A Message from the SAR President

May 2015

Greetings SAR members and friends,

It is indeed a true honor to serve as President of this society. It has been approximately 3 years since the merger of the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiologists and the Society of Uroradiology and I am happy to report that the SAR is thriving. The vibrancy of the SAR was clearly palpable at this past annual meeting. We had many new members in attendance reflecting the impressive growth of the society and the great attraction of the annual meeting. Many attendees remarked about the high level of science evident in the oral abstract presentations and how much they learned from the outstanding plenary talks and the workshop sessions. We also had four successful well-attended Hands-on workshops (CT Colonography, Dual Energy CT, Advanced Prostate MRI, and Advanced Small Bowel Imaging) all of which will be held again next year.

Active planning for the 2016 annual meeting is well underway and members recently submitted their morning workshop lecture requests. We will be re-configuring the Sunday scientific sessions so that there will be four sessions with two parallel tracks allowing for more oral presentations. Also new for 2016 will be a Leadership Session for Abdominal Radiologists and we are adding an Advanced Female Pelvic MRI Hands-on workshop. Several new self-assessment modules will also be introduced at the meeting as well.

Thanks to the SAR Board Members (Deb, Bill, Giles, Bernie, and Jonny) for their extraordinary engagement and contributions. I am fortunate to work with such a talented and dedicated team. I also want to express my deep gratitude to all of you who work so hard throughout the year on SAR committees. The SAR is built on the generous volunteerism and hard work of our members. We have formed new committees over the past several years to help address new initiatives and to bring programs to fruition and this has proven to be very successful. Our web and social media presence has been significantly enhanced and we continue to look at novel ways to present timely information and educational opportunities.

We look forward to working with many of you on expanding programs over the next year including the multidisciplinary Disease Focused Panels and the Abdominal Imaging Program Directors group. The newly established SAR Fund is essential for supporting our efforts to promote abdominal radiology practice, education and research and we ask everyone to contribute each year to make this effort successful. For this coming year the SAR Fund will allow us for the first time to sponsor Travel Grants to be awarded to the top scientific abstracts by trainees. This is part of our effort to increase participation and inclusion of medical students, residents and fellows as we actively promote our subspecialty to interested and talented trainees.

We will also be deploying an Abdominal Radiology Mentoring Program. Mentoring of our members is an investment in the future success of our field. The success of our subspecialty will be guided by what we can accomplish in the years to come. There will be more to come as we formalize opportunities for mentors and mentees and a launching event will be held at the annual meeting. Please let me know if you have specific interest in helping us roll out this program. At the same time, the society would like to recognize our most senior members (of the previous SGR/SUR) and we are planning for special opportunities to recognize and congratulate our longest-time members.

I invite you to join us for the SAR 2016 Annual Scientific Meeting and Educational Course which will be held March 13 - 18, 2016 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village in Hawaii. You will experience innovative science, the latest advances in abdominal imaging and educational opportunities provided by leaders in the field, all in a spectacular venue. This will be a meeting you do not want to miss so mark your calendar now. Be a part of the SAR experience!

Sincerely,

Judy Yee, MD, FACR, FSAR
SAR President 2015 - 2016
