A Message from the SAR President

October 2015

new imageWelcome SAR Members and Friends,

I would like to update you on the great progress that we have had with multiple new initiatives of the Society. It is a new academic year and since we started to encourage Members-in-Training to apply for SAR membership we have seen tremendous response. At this time we have over 80 Members-in-Training up from 15 just a few months ago. Please continue to help us spread the word to fellows, residents and medical students and remember that we have waived the membership fee for all trainees.

We are also supporting our youngest members by offering competitive Travel Grants for trainees to help bring them to the annual meeting to present abstracts. The SAR Fund has allowed us to offer these for the first time! Our target of $100,000 is within reach so please contribute to this very worthwhile fund! We value each and every contribution and suggest annual giving to support the future of our field. All donors are recognized on the SAR website and at the annual meeting.

There are many SAR membership benefits and the number of new members continues to grow. All members of SAR have access to Abdominal Imaging, the official journal of our society.  Look out for new changes to the journal coming soon!

The 2016 SAR Annual Scientific Meeting and Educational Course brochure is available and online registration is now open. I want to thank members of the Educational and Scientific Planning Committees for all their behind the scenes hard work over the summer to pull together a phenomenal program. Our Informatics and Social Media Committee members have also been hard at work. Apps for research awards are now open, and apps for FSAR status will follow soon. Have you checked out the SAR Facebook page? We have reached over 5,000 likes on Facebook so look for a unique posting recognizing this milestone!

Three new Disease Focused Panel (DFP) applications have been received. Pending review and approval, this will bring our total number of DFP’s to 11 by the just the second year of this exciting and innovative program. If you are not already a part of a DFP, please take a look at the offerings and you will likely find one that is of interest to you. If not, you may want to bring together colleagues and develop a new DFP in your area of expertise. This is a unique leadership opportunity as well as a chance to network with experts in the field.

We will be holding our kick-off event for the new SAR Mentoring Program at the meeting so please plan to attend. Solicitations for both mentors and mentees are forthcoming so please watch out for more information and I encourage you to take part in what I am sure will be a gratifying and valuable experience. I wanted to bring your attention to a new two part workshop primer for leaders and potential radiology leaders to be held during the Tuesday track. We are planning for a special companion evening event for those interested so look out for that as well.

As you can see this is an exciting time for SAR as we embark on areas of expansion and innovation. This is your society so if you have ideas you would like to see incorporated, please let us know. I encourage you to register now for The SAR 2016 Annual Scientific Meeting and Educational Course which will be held March 13 - 18, 2016 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Come see old friends, make new friends, network, and learn from leaders in the field. I look forward to seeing you there!
